Architecture in Perspective (AIP) is the annual international competition and exhibition of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI).* AIP furthers the Society’s objectives by selecting its members’ most outstanding work and presenting it in major venues worldwide over the course of the year. Selected artwork also appears in the AIP catalog and on the website at www.asai.org.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ENTER?
AIP 31 is a 2016 competition. The competition is open to current 2016 ASAI members. Any existing, lapsed and new members may pay their annual membership fees when they submit their entries. Jurors and other participants in the adjudication process may not submit work for the competition.

WHAT CAN BE ENTERED?
The competition consists of three sections:

1. Rendering Section – The original ASAI competition that is now in its 31st year. Illustrations must depict subjects that do not wholly exist at the time of illustration. Individual members may submit a maximum of 10 entries, total, in the Rendering and Observational Sections.

Renderings may be entered in either of two categories:
Formal Category -formal presentation renderings, drawings, paintings and digital imagery.
Informal Category -sketches, drawings, paintings and digital imagery.

2. Observational Illustration Section – Observational illustrations consist of field sketches, plein air drawings, depictions of architectural details, entire buildings and topographical illustration – subjects that exist entirely at the time of illustration.

3. Student Illustration Section – Student submissions by registered full-time students must depict subjects that do not wholly exist at the time of illustration and may consist of renderings, fantasy compositions or assigned projects. Student members may submit a maximum of 5 entries.

WHAT ARE THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS?
Illustrations must be submitted in digital form only, as highest quality RGB-mode JPG files, no larger than 2000 x 1300 pixels.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Entry Fees: For the Rendering and Observational Sections, the entry fee is US$65 for the first submitted image, and US$30 per image thereafter, with a maximum of 10 images.

For the Student Section, the entry fee will be US$10 for the first image and US$5 per image thereafter, with a maximum of 5 images.

Non-ASAI members may join at the time of submission.

JUDGING CRITERIA
The Jury will select the finest work, representing a cross-section of architectural illustrations, encompassing a range of media, architectural subject matter and rendering styles, including perspectives and orthographic views. Artwork may be in any 2D medium – hand-done or digital. Images may be client-commissioned, self-commissioned, competition entries or entirely imaginary (to be indicated on the entry form). Approximately 70 entries will be selected for exhibition and inclusion in the catalog, with no more than one selection per artist or three artists per corporate entry in each section.

Student entries are judged separately from the Rendering and Observational Sections by a jury that includes senior ASAI members.

Rendering Section
Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize
CASH PRIZE $5,000 USD + Next year membership free

The entry in the Rendering Section that is unanimously selected by the jury as most deserving of the honor of ‘Best in Show’ will be awarded the Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize - a framed, specially cast medallion. The image will also appear on the cover of the exhibition catalog and be featured in publicity surrounding the show.
Formal Category Award
CASH PRIZE $250 USD + Next year membership free

Informal (Sketch) Category Award
CASH PRIZE $250 USD + Next year membership free

Special certificates will be presented to the single image that the judges deem best from each of the two categories.
Rendering Juror’s Awards
Special certificates will be presented to three images, one selected by each judge.
The Members’ Choice Award
CASH PRIZE $250 USD + Next year membership free

A special certificate will be presented to an entry selected online by the votes of ASAI members in this category.
Rendering Award of Excellence
All entries selected for the exhibition and inclusion in the catalog will receive an Award of Excellence certificate.

Observational Section
Observational Best in Show
CASH PRIZE $250 USD + Next year membership free

A special certificate will be presented to the illustration deemed to be the ‘Best in Show’ in this section.
Observational Award of Excellence
All entries selected for the exhibition and inclusion in the catalog will receive an Award of Excellence certificate.

Student Section
Student Award of Excellence
CASH PRIZE $1,000 USD + 2016 Conference Registration

The entry selected ‘Best in Show’ will receive a Certificate of Excellence.
Student Awards of Merit
CASH PRIZE (3 awards) at $250 USD

The jury, at their discretion, may select entries that will receive Certificates of Merit.

Student Award of Excellence and Awards of Merit winning entries will be included in the exhibition and in the catalog.


DEADLINE AND NOTIFICATION
Entries will be received digitally at ASAI Headquarters in Hebron, Maine:
Rendering and Observational Entries EXTENDED - Friday, February 5, 2016 - 12am EST.
Student Entries - Monday, March 7, 2015 - 5pm EST.

The recipients will be notified in the spring of 2016 and awards will be presented officially at ASAI’s annual conference and awards ceremony September 28-October 2, 2016 in Boston, MA USA.
